In Ruins: The Once Great Houses of Ireland Details
Ireland's once great houses and castles, designed by the most accomplished architects of their day for the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, bear witness to a troubled history of civil war, famine, and bankruptcy. Splendid in their prime, the ruins have absorbed the romantic beauty and mystery of the surrounding landscape -- qualities brilliantly captured by Simon Marsden's infrared-filtered photographs and Duncan McLaren's vivid text.First published in 1980 but long out of print, In Ruins has now been revised and updated to include eleven new sites and thirty previously unpublished images. Reviews
I love Ireland. Twenty trips shows my love. About ten years ago, I stayed in a B&B in Co. Kerry and came across this wonderful book. The late Sir Simon Marsden is perhaps one of my favorite photographers. His haunting, evocative images illustrate this book. Photographed with Infrared film (a style he has used in numerous books since), the photos propel the story of these once great homes, now left to ruin. This book is worth the price for anyone interested in photography, history and Ireland, and will be a great addition to anyone's library shelf.
